Turkey
Turkey’s connection includes two distinct histories: the old Bulgarian Orthodox institutions of Istanbul and Edirne, and much larger communities descended from people who migrated from Bulgaria, many of them ethnic Turks, including the forced migration of 1989.
Who may be in this applicant category
This applicant category may include children or descendants of Bulgarian citizens, former citizens seeking restoration, Bulgarian Turks and other families shaped by migration, as well as residence, marriage or general-naturalisation cases. The published table does not separate those routes.
Records worth tracing first
Trace Bulgarian birth, citizenship and civil-status records for the parent or ancestor; connect every generation; reconcile Turkish/Bulgarian spellings and name changes; then check legalisation and Bulgarian-translation rules before ordering documents.
Official place to start
Open the official authority, ordering service or government guidance before paying an intermediary. Access rules differ for your own record, a living relative, a deceased ancestor and an archive record.

- Confirm the exact event, municipality and record year.
- Ask who may order it and whether a power of attorney or proof of kinship is required.
- Request the long-form or full extract when parent names and later annotations matter.
- Check apostille, treaty exemption, digital-signature acceptance and Bulgarian translation before choosing format.
- Create one spelling table for every name, maiden name, script and changed place name.
Census, church, archive and community material can locate a record. It proves a legal family chain only when a competent authority issues or certifies the evidence required for the route.

What this map cannot tell you: Applicants with Turkish nationality are not necessarily ethnic Bulgarians. Former Bulgarian citizenship, descent, family migration and historic community membership are different connections and must not be collapsed into one.
Country, community or surname never decides eligibility. The legal route and official document chain do.
